What Does Human-First Leadership Look Like Day to Day?

Pull up a chair. Grab a cup of coffee. Let’s have a real talk, heart-to-heart.

Lately, I’ve been hearing a recurring question from leaders and managers who are, frankly, tired. They want to lead differently, with more heart and more humanity, but they aren't sure how that actually works. One reader asked - "What does human-first leadership look like on a day-to-day basis?”

I love this question. In an "AI" world, we tend to see fewer phrases like "human-centric." Human-first leadership is about recognizing the inherent dignity of the person standing in front of you. It’s about leading with courage instead of mere compliance.

One example - before you dive into the status updates, ask a genuine question: "How are you doing today? Truly?" And then actually listen to the answer. If they tell you their kid is sick or they didn't sleep well because they’re stressed about a personal matter, acknowledge it. You don't have to be their therapist, but you do have to be a human.

By spending those first five minutes focusing on the person, you’re signaling that their well-being matters more than their output. Ironically, when people feel seen and valued, they usually perform better anyway. But we do it because it’s the right thing to do, not just to move a metric. Also - there is this old-school myth that a leader has to have all the answers.  If you don't, you're failing right? Wrong!

Human-first leadership looks like sitting in a meeting, hearing a complex problem, and saying: "You know what? I actually don't have the answer to that right now. What are you all seeing that I might be missing?"

This is courageous leadership. It’s vulnerable, and it’s incredibly powerful. It invites your team into the solution-making process. It shows them that you value their expertise and that we’re all in this together.

I know this might feel like a lot. If you’ve spent years in corporate environments where compliance and metrics were the only things that mattered, shifting to a human-first approach can feel like you’re learning to ride a bike all over again. You might feel a little wobbly at first. You might worry that you’re losing your "edge." But I promise you, leading with heart is the most "productive" thing you can do. When people feel valued, respected, and seen, they don't just work harder, they work better. They innovate. They stay. They care.

If you’re looking for a deeper dive into how to navigate these waters, especially if you’re feeling like you’re drowning in corporate bureaucracy, I’d love for you to check out my book, "They’re Worth It!". It’s all about what it truly means to put employees first and how to build a culture that honors the human element of work.

At the end of the day, remember this: You aren't just managing "resources." You’re leading people. And those people? They’re worth it.

And hey, so are you!
