What leadership looks like

I spoke about this in today’s Instagram reflection. The strongest leaders aren’t always in front. Sometimes they are behind the team, cheering people on, clearing the path, and giving credit away. That kind of leadership may look quiet, but it’s not weak. It often helps others grow. In the story, I spoke about a leader of an organization who, rather than embrace feedback, chose instead to ignore it and shun the person giving it.  That's not leadership. That's ducking or avoiding leadership.

I have learned to stay close to people who make me better. I don't fear their insight; I value it. Early in my career, I thought leadership meant having the answer first or being the only one with the answer.  I could not have been more wrong.  I thought being a good manager was catching people doing wrong. What I learned: my job is to catch them doing right and highlight it!

I still believe in accountability. I still believe in standards. I also believe accountability and humanity can sit together. Every employee is someone’s precious son or daughter. That standard changes how we correct, how we decide, and how we lead. It keeps us from confusing performance management with disregard or degradation. It keeps us grounded in people. People do better when they know they matter. And that's what They're Worth It! is all about.

If this reflection helps you lead without losing your humanity, subscribe for weekly updates. I would love it if you would share it with others as well.  Thanks!
