FTE or Family?

Have you ever looked at your employee badge and wondered if anyone at the top even knows your name, or if you're just a line item on a spreadsheet? In traditional corporate structures, we often get reduced to an acronym: FTE. Full-Time Equivalent. A unit of labor. A resource to be allocated, optimized, and occasionally trimmed when the quarterly metrics demand it. When you are viewed as an FTE, work feels transactional. Your worth is measured strictly by output, utilization rates, and deadline compliance.

Now, contrast that with what happens when a leader adopts a completely different lens: one where every person in the organization is viewed as someone's special child. As we explored in my weekly blog - The Leadership We All Deserve, leadership changes entirely when you stop seeing employees as functions and start seeing them as human lives entrusted to your care.

When you aren't just managing tasks, you are nurturing potential - mistakes aren't met with immediate panic or punitive metrics; they are met with guidance, patience, and the kind of care you would offer your own flesh and blood. You feel seen. You feel valued. You feel safe to bring your authentic self to work instead of hiding behind a polished, burnout-prone professional mask.

How much more vibrant, creative, and resilient would our workplaces be if every manager treated their team not as replaceable headcount, but as someone they were deeply responsible for protecting and elevating?
