The Yes That Changed Everything
Sometimes, a single “yes” opens more than a calendar invitation.
Someone reaches out and asks, “Would you like to grab coffee?” Maybe you are busy. Maybe you wonder what they want. Maybe you tell yourself you will respond later, after the next meeting, deadline, or difficult week. What if you said yes? Like, immediately!
A coffee conversation may not lead to a new job, promotion, or immediate opportunity. That is not always the point. Sometimes the gift is simpler: you are reminded that you are more than your title, and the other person gets to know the human being behind your résumé or role.
We can often underestimate what can happen when we make room for one honest conversation. A former colleague may share a perspective you needed. A friend outside your industry may help you see your situation differently. Someone you barely know may become a trusted connection over time. The conversation might feel ordinary in the moment. Then, months later, you realize it changed the direction of your thinking.
When we connect outside of work, we also loosen the grip our titles can have on our identity. We remember that our relationships are not valuable only when they produce something. We can listen, encourage, learn, and simply share time.
So, think about the last person who asked to meet. Is there someone you have been meaning to contact? Perhaps your next meaningful connection begins with a simple yes.
This week’s reflection: Who could you make time for: a former colleague, a friend, a mentor, or someone who recently reached out?
